WISE FOLKS WRITE SIMPLE
Last week, I’d been writing Ruby code a lot. Initially, it was a lot of everything, a messy pile of instructions with the half of them commented. At some point, I managed to get to the solution which appeared to be neat, really simple, and clean.
Realizing this, I stopped to muse on what I created.
I’ve always believed that natural languages and programming languages have so much in common that the same approach applies to writing in any of them.
It’s more difficult to write simply than to write flowery.
“Shouldn’t the same be correct for programming?” I asked myself. The answer came immediately, “Yes. Just look back at all the effort you put into these few lines of code.”
Smart guys write fast. Skillful ones write decently. Wise folks write simple.
That’s it. Whatever I write, it’d better be simple. Heck, it turned out that I’m really working my ass off to become a wise one.
